Women's golf team set to tee off in Georgia

The Eastern Florida State College women's golf team will tee off in the final regular season event Monday in Georgia.

The Titans will play in the Dalton State Roadrunner Invitational on Monday and Tuesday at the Nob North Golf Course in Dalton, Georgia.

"It has lots of hills, so it is way different than what we are used to," golfer Gabrielle Fernandez said. "A lot of tournaments we play in don't have as much undulation, especially on the greens, so we are focusing on putting and especially long putts."

Fernandez is coming off a sixth-place finish in the USCB Ladies Invitational, helping the team post a second-place finish in the event. Overall the team is playing some of its best golf in the past month, shooting 311 or better as a team in each of the past three rounds.

"They have come a long way, the tournament up in South Carolina was huge for them, the one day match over in Mayfair, we played mediocre and shot 311 so all of a sudden you realize our marginal scores are getting closer," Eastern Florida State College women's golf coach Jamie Howell said. "There is still a lot of work to be done but everything we are doing right now is geared toward the district tournament. The tournament in Georgia is going to be a good field, good competition for the team. I need the heat of that moment, but the idea is to just keep getting ready."

The Titans will host the District 6 Championship on April 17-18 at Duran Golf Club in Viera.
