Men's tennis team opens national tournament today in South Carolina

Men's tennis team opens national tournament today in South Carolina

The Eastern Florida State College men's tennis team will open the NJCAA Division I National Tournament on Monday morning at the Dr. Eddie Floyd Tennis Center in Florence, South Carolina.

The tournament will get a late start due to weather but the Titans will have four matches on the first day.

No. 1 singles player Alexandr Achour, who was named the Region IV and National Most Improved Sophomore on Sunday evening, will open play against Mesa Community College's Carson Abril in the first round. Achour comes into the tournament as the No. 6 seed in the tournament.

No. 2 singles player Alberto Perez Mellado is also the No. 6 seed and will open the tournament against Northwest Mississippi Community College's Miguel Lazaga Robayna.

No. 3 singles player Filip Sormaz will play Paradise Valley Community College's Leyton Fetty Monday in the first round.

The No. 1 doubles team of Alexandr Achour and Zakaria Achour are the No. 7 seed and will open Monday afternoon against Marion Military Institute's Flex Howard and John  Wassell.

Salva Mulet was named the ITA Region IV Rookie of the Year on Sunday. Mulet will team up with Filip Sormaz at No. 2 doubles and the duo have a bye in the first round as the No. 3 seed.

Pablo Garcia Rodriguez is the No. 4 seed at No. 4 singles and has a bye in the first round as does Thomas Kurz Cardozo at No. 5 singles. Kurz is the No. 2 seed in the tournament. Konstantin Kukaras is the No. 4 seed at No. 6 singles and also has a bye.

The No. 3 doubles team of Garcia and Kurz also have a bye in the first round of the tournament.
