Avery Velazquez named FCSAA Pitcher of the Week
Eastern Florida State College softball pitcher Avery Velazquez was named the FCSAA Pitcher of the Week for the second time this season on Tuesday.
The freshman right-hander helped the Titans to a 6-0 week, winning three games and picking up a save. Velazquez allowed two earned runs over 19 1/3 innings in four games.
Velazquez held off No. 8 Miami Dade to start her week and then locked down the second win to sweep the Sharks. Then the Ocoee native dominated No. 21 Santa Fe, allowing two hits in seven innings before picking up the win against the College of Central Florida on Saturday.
For the season, Velazquez is 17-8 with a 1.33 ERA and has 123 strikeouts in 157 1/3 innings. She is also tied for the FCSAA lead with four saves.
The 17 wins is tied for third in the state while the 1.33 ERA is fifth and the 123 strikeouts is second.
She has been named the FCSAA Player of the Week three times and the pitcher of the Week twice this season.
Velazquez and the Titans will head to Daytona State College today to play the Falcons in a Citrus Conference doubleheader beginning at 2 p.m. Eastern Florida State College will be back at Titan Softball Complex on Saturday for a doubleheader against St. Petersburg College.
