Softball team sweeps No. 19 Seminole State College

The Eastern Florida State College softball team swept No. 19 Seminole State College in a Citrus Conference doubleheader Tuesday on the road.

The Titans, who moved into fifth place in the conference standings, used the long ball to defeat Seminole State College 11-7 and then 16-9 to improve to 12-10 in the conference and 27-11 overall.

In Game 1, Livie Davis, Kyla Leppin and McKenzie Jewell all hit home runs as the Titans has 11 runs on 12 hits.

The Titans scored five times in the third inning highlighted by Leppin's two-run home run. Then in the fifth inning Davis hit a two-run home run and Jewell would follow with a solo home run to make it 9-1.

Seminole State College would score three times in the fifth and three more times in the sixth to make it 9-7.

But Brooke Theisen's RBI double in the seventh followed by Leppin's single would give the Titans the 11-7 win.

Davis had three hits and drove in four runs while Leppin had three hits and drove in three runs.  

Hannah Strickland picked up the win, her 10th of the season and Luci Walters pitched the seventh for the save.

In Game 2, the Titans hit four more home runs as Eastern Florida State College exploded for 16 runs on 23 hits to complete the sweep.

Down 1-0, the Titans would score three times in the top of the second inning on Davis' three-run home run. It was her second of the day and the season.

After Seminole State cut the lead to 3-2, Jewell would homer in the top of the third inning to make it 4-2. It was Jewell's third home run of the season. The Titans would go on to score four times and take a 7-2 lead.

Seminole State would respond with three runs in the bottom of the third inning.

Up 7-5, the Titans would score a run in the fourth, two in the fifth and another in the sixth to hold a 12-9 lead heading to the seventh inning.

In the seventh, both Leppin and Marisa Shoudt each hit home runs during a four-run inning. It was Leppin's third home run of the season and the first for Shoudt.

Davis went 4-for-4 and was a triple short of a cycle. The shortstop scored twice and drove in four runs in the game while Madison Ford also had four hits. Jewell and Leppin each had three hits.

The Titans will be back at home Thursday to play the State College of Florida, Manatee in a Citrus Conference doubleheader beginning at 2 p.m.
